FAQ

Q: Can iSSH be used to connect into the console of my iPhone/iPod Touch like MobileTerminal on jailbroken phones?

A: No. Apple approved applications cannot access the local console or execute other applications on the device.

Q: Can iSSH be used to transfer files directly onto the iPhone's file system using SCP or WinSCP?

A: No. While it is possible to use SSH to transfer files between a desktop and an iPhone (Air Sharing Pro by Avatron Software is a good example), all iPhone apps are restricted to writing in a specific area of the device and cannot access the whole file system.

Q: How can I use iSSH with an existing key file?

A: Version 4.4 supports the use of the iPhone/iPod Touch internally generated keys and allows for the export of the public key by email or by pre-configured, passworded based, SSH connection. Additionally one can import private keys using the OpenSSH format to the iPhone clipboard. It can also export the iPhone-generated private keys in OpenSSH format to the iPhone clipboard.

Q: How do I access the arrow keys for the console?

On the iPhone the keys are accessible via the slide out bar at the top of the screen. Also, the key pie menu comes pre-configured with arrow keys.

On the iPad, the arrow keys are available through the keyboard accessory or through the key pie menu.

Q: How do I organize connections (delete groups, move connections between groups, etc.)?

A: On the main screen, go to the highest level of connects and tap "Edit". From there, one can move connections between groups, delete connections and delete groupings. Deleting a group will consolidate the connections underneath it with the group above it, or put those connections at the top level.

Q: When trying to use Gnome or KDE with the X Server, I get a message to the effect of "Another window manager is already running"

A: iSSH comes with a built-in window manager, dwm. You can disable it under General Settings.

Q: How can I disable background notification when connections are left open after switching out of iSSH?

A:You can disable it under General Settings with the option "Background Alert."
