Quick Start Guide

The X Server

To connect clients to the X server, connect using SSH to any system that has X clients (xterm, xclock, KDE, GNOME, etc.) installed. The SSH connection, if possible, automatically configures for X11 forwarding. Each active SSH console can have its clients connect to the root X window.

The X server automatically starts when iSSH is opened. To connect without SSH (assuming the iPhone/Touch is on a LAN), set the the DISPLAY variable to what is displayed at the top of the X root window.

In this example, on the console I wish to run X clients from, I would type:

export DISPLAY=192.168.32.3:0

On that same console, I could then run xterm or other X clients. To start a window manager, type "twm" for TWM. "gnome-session" for GNOME and "startkde" for KDE, assuming they are installed on your system.

Note: Exporting the DISPLAY variable is not necessary when running X clients from a SSH tunneled console.

To get to the X server's root window, tap the X logo in the upper right hand corner of the Active Connections screen.

No window manager is loaded at startup, so X clients will overlap each other if no geometry is specified. By default, the X root window is always a screen 1024x768 in resolution.

In the lower left corner are mouse buttons. The mouse is moved by single tapping anywhere in the screen. Pinching in and out will zoom in and out, respectively.

Double tapping will result a single click. In the lower left hand corner there is a pad that can be tapped to simulate or hold the left or right mouse buttons.

In the right corner is an icon of a keyboard that brings up the keyboard above the X server. Above the keyboard is a set of arrow keys. Tapping this will bring up a widget that contains the arrow keys and other special keys like Ctrl, Alt,Tab, etc.

Finally, understand that all X clients must be disconnected before the VNC client will become functional again.
