Quick Start Guide

Overview of the X server and SSH, Telnet, VNC, Raw clients.

iSSH can support multiple simultaneous connections to a variety of servers (Windows, OS X, and Unix-like) and receive connections from X clients running on Unix-like operating systems.

Any number of simultaneous SSH, Telnet or raw connections can be made from iSSH, up to the limit of the available memory on the iPhone/iPod Touch. iSSH can even connect multiple times to the same server/connection entry.

As for the X server and VNC client, due to memory limitations, they both share the same display area. As such, only one VNC client can be open at any given time. Also, only either the VNC client or the X server can be active at a time. Clients connected to the X server will prevent the VNC client from starting, and with a VNC client connected no connections can be made to the X server.

The following briefly describes the connection types iSSH supports and their use:

  • Raw - Provides a console to a TCP port on a server. No protocol or line discipline is implemented.

Uses: Diagnosing responses from service ports such as SMTP, FTP, etc.

  • Telnet - Connects to a telnet server.

Uses: Online BBS systems. Connecting unsecurely to devices for initial configuration.

  • SSH - Connects to an SSH server.

Uses: Secure remote console administration. Secure port tunneling for X clients

  • VNC - Connects graphically to a Windows, OS X, Xvnc server or any other vnc-like server.

Uses: (Without SSH tunneling) Unsecure remote graphical administration. Is tunneled through SSH to provide secure remote access.

  • X Server - Provides a display that X clients, run remotely, can display graphical output

Uses: (Without SSH tunneling) Unsecure remote graphical administration. Is tunneled through SSH to provide secure remote client accessibility.
While only the X server or VNC client can be active at one time, any mix of one VNC/X server and any number of console connections (up to the limit of device memory) is allowed.
